The Department of Environmental Management is connected to the Department of General Physical Geography, founded in 1938 by Academician of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR B.P. Orlov. It was later transformed into the Department of General Physical Geography and Paleogeography in 1953 by Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences K.K. Markov. Then, in 1987, it was transformed to the Department of Environmental Management by the corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences/RAS A.P. Kapitsa.
The idea of creating a department that combines the problems of physical and economic geography within the framework of a single geographical science belongs to Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences Konstantin Konstantinovich Markov. It was brought into life in 1987 by Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences / RAS Andrei Petrovich Kapitsa, who headed the department until 2011. Since 2011, the department has been headed by his former student, professor, Doctor of Economics Mikhail Viktorovich Slipenchuk.
Today, the department of environmental management has staff formed by specialists in the field of environmental management, environmental monitoring and nature conservation. The staff of the department includes educational and scientific staff of three laboratories: general physical geography, monitoring of aquatic ecosystems, optimization of land use.
Graduates of the department are geographers and environmental specialists, experts in environmental management, environmental monitoring and protection, working in scientific, educational and applied fields, connecting their activities with analysis, justification and decision-making on the integrated assessment and use of natural resources.

The department trains undergraduate and graduate students in the “Ecology and Environmental Management” program. Postgraduate studies are held in track 1.6.21 “Geoecology” (geography) and 1.6.13 “Economic, social, political and recreational geography” (geography).
In addition, the department carries out retraining of persons with higher education from various sectors of the national economy in the following areas: “Ecology and environmental management”, “Aesthetics and landscape design”.
