Nikolay S. Kasimov graduated from the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1968. Doctor of Geographical Sciences (1984), Professor (1990), Member-correspondent of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2000), Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2008). Dean of the Faculty of Geography (1990-2015), Head of the Department of Landscape Geochemistry and Soil Geography (since 1988), President of the Faculty of Geography (since 2015).

N.S. Kasimov is a well–known specialist in landscape geochemistry, environmental geochemistry, paleogeochemistry in Russia and abroad, the author of more than 500 published works. The main scientific results are related to the development of theoretical problems of geochemistry of landscapes, ecogeochemistry of cities, geochemistry of aquatic landscapes, the use of atlas Geoinformation technologies in environmental sciences.

N.S. Kasimov participates in the editorial activities of a number of scientific publications. He is the editor and a member of the editorial board of leading journals on geography and ecology in Russia and abroad. Among them: Geography, Environment, Sustainability; The official newspaper of Moscow University; Izvestia RAS; Izvestia of the Russian Geographical Society; Ecology of Russia and many others.
